Why it matters

In a survey of air rescue, police and military helicopter pilots, 2 out of 3 reported flight-related neck pain in the past year.

Source: Posch et al., BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2019. Survey of 104 helicopter pilots in Austria, mostly air rescue and police.

Flying with night vision goggles nearly doubles those odds. A 2019 Department of Defense report to Congress put the cost of each permanently grounded aircrew member at $600,000 to $2 million. The legacy helmet that was designed to save them on their worst day was quietly ending careers. RATH was designed in partnership with US Special Operations Command to address the cumulative effects of wearing a helmet and NVGs without compromising crash protection.
